How do I live freely in this broken world?

How do I live a life of freedom in this sinful and broken world?
As we mentioned in the previous devotional, although finding freedom in Christ is as simple as accepting a gift, it isn’t easy to always live out your freedom since we still live in a broken world. So how do we do this? We hope you will take encouragement from the following verses.
“Knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin.
Romans 6:6-7
“But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.”
Romans 6:17-18
“For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.”
Galatians 5:13
So, what does it mean to live freely? We are no longer slaves to sin- meaning sin no longer has power over us! We are now slaves to righteousness- meaning we have the ability to live rightly, since we have the Holy Spirit residing in us. So, living freely is obeying Christ and His commands. It means we can serve others with the right motives. It means seeking God in His Word and walking in accordance with it!
“And I will walk at liberty, for I seek Your precepts.”
Psalm 119:45
I know, again, this sounds a lot easier to say than to do. We still live in a sinful world, where temptations abound, and our flesh is weak. We may stumble along with way, but God will not let us slip out of His hands. He will help us along the way, if we let Him. It is also crucial to have community and accountability around you. This way you can encourage each other in Biblical ways. It also helps if you struggle with a certain sin to have someone who is specifically praying for you in that area and can ask how you are doing in that area. If we listen to the Holy Spirit’s direction, we can do all those things! Like Paul says in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”
Reflection Time:
- Do you truly believe what Philippians 4:13 says is possible? Why or why not?
- How are you using your freedom in Christ? In what ways can you grow?
- Do you have a prayer and/or accountability partner? Do you think it would be helpful to have one if you don’t have one already? Why or why not? If you have one, how has it helped your faith life?
